Hip replacement devices like the ones provide by Zimmer Durom, most commonly consists of three manufactured pieces, designed to mimic or duplicate the operation of a natural joint. Hip replacement kits include a piece of metal for part of the femur bone. There is also a component which facilitates natural movement that simulates a natural joint, finally there is either some type of bone cement or screws that holds the whole thing in place.

A revision is often required to be performed after the initial hip replacement surgery, a revision is a second surgery necessary to correct any issues with the original surgery. Surgeons and doctors were choosing the Zimmer Durom for patients that under normal conditions would require a full hip replacement, as it was designed to be long lasting. Even though this was the case, close to 12 percent of the people who received the Zimmer Durom hip implant needed a revision surgery within two years, prompted both emotional and physical reactions.

Though Zimmer Durom has stated that this high failure rate is a caused by surgeon error, even though they made this initial statement they totally ceased all sales of their hip replacement in July of 2008. In a study funded by the company, what they found was that 8 percent of the people that received the initial hip replacement required a revision surgery withing a two year period. This significant revision percentage has basically led the medical and legal communities to accept that the issue is the device itself and not the way in which it was inserted during surgery.
